A Rosary Rally for Life will be held in James Green Kilkenny (beside St. Mary’s Cathedral) on Saturday June 8th at 3pm.

Prayers led by Bishop Seamus Freeman. Rosary will be followed by Benediction in St. Mary’s Cathedral.

All are encouraged to attend and support this rally. The abortion issue is a very serious moral issue for the Church in Ireland at this time. Everything we can do to support life, from conception to natural death, is both necessary and essential.

Dublin Vigil for Life

On Saturday, 8th June, there will be a Vigil for Life in Merrion Square, Dublin from 3.00pm to 4.00pm. The Vigil will send a clear, positive message about safeguarding the lives of mothers and babies in pregnancy. Call 087 266 8702 for bus details.

The annual Diocesan Corpus Christi Procession, through the streets of Kilkenny City, will take place next Sunday, 2nd June 2013

Saint John’s to Saint Mary’s, beginning at 2.30 p.m. sharp. All are asked to assemble at St John’s Church at 2.15 for a 2.30pm start.

The annual Diocesan Corpus Christi Procession, through the streets of Kilkenny City, will take place next Sunday, 2nd June.

Bishop Freeman will carry the monstrance, bearing the Blessed Sacrament, in procession from St John’s Church at 2.30pm to St Mary’s Cathedral for Solemn Benediction.

The city parishes will organise ‘prayer stations’ along the route, i.e. St John’s, Canal Square, The Town Hall and The Cathedral, with local parish choirs providing the sacred music at the various stations.

To mark the Year Of Faith, Pope Francis has requested that every Diocese throughout the world would conduct an hour’s Eucharistic Adoration at roughly the same time as he will be conducting one in St Peter’s Basilica in Rome on the feast of Corpus Christi. So, the same prayers that Pope Francis will be using in The Vatican will also be used during our procession, as a sign of our union with the Universal Church.

In this Year of Faith all people from the Diocese are very much welcome and encouraged to come along to celebrate out faith in the Lord, especially those children who have made their First Communion.

All are asked to assemble at St John’s Church at 2.15 for a 2.30pm start.

National and International choirs will raise the roof at 2nd International Gospel Choir Festival

14th – 16th June and throughout the Summer months

The 2nd International Gospel Choir Festival takes place in Kilkenny from 14th – 16th June; 17th & 18th July and 8th – 12th August 2013. Full programme of events and details on choir registration available at www.kilkennygospelchoirfestival.co

Kilkenny City has launched itself as Ireland’s “City of Song” with the announcement of the programme for the 2nd International Gospel Choir Festival. Attracting over 2,000 visitors over one weekend in its first year, this year’s Festival will essentially triple in size, extending over June, July and August. The 2013 programme features the country’s first dedicated Gospel Music workshop for children and the biggest ever Gospel Choir performance to take place in Ireland. Choirs from across Ireland, the UK and the US will participate in this year’s Festival and places remain available for other Irish or international singers and choirs seeking to participate.

Internationally acclaimed Choir Director Ja Ronn Thompson is the Guest Director and Artist at the 2nd International Gospel Choir Festival. Director of the San Francisco University Gospel Choir, Thompson will teach 8 to 12 year olds at Ireland’s first Gospel Music workshop for children. The packed programme will also feature Gospel workshops for adults, an open air Gospel concert in the shadows of Kilkenny Castle and a unique Gospel themed tour of Kilkenny City. Festivities in June will culminate in Ireland’s largest ever Gospel Choir concert in the City’s Cathedral. World renowned choirs from Mississippi and the University of Arkansas Gospel Choir will perform at events in Kilkenny in July and August.

“Ireland has a very special relationship with Gospel music, which has been only been enhanced as our country becomes increasingly multicultural. Gospel music is a marriage between music, spirituality and worship, all of which play a large part in our psyche. It’s a particularly tough time for many people in Ireland at the moment and we hope this year’s Festival, which includes an increased programme of public events and performances will, in a small way, help to lift people’s spirits and morale. We invite all music lovers to come to Kilkenny, our “City of Song” this Summer to help us to raise the roof!” said Fr Willie Purcell, Chairperson, 2nd International Gospel Choir Festival.

“We were astounded with the success of last’s years Festival and how the people of Kilkenny and the country at large took the Festival to its heart. We’ve increased the size of this year’s Festival three-fold and in this the year of The Gathering we expect to attract even greater numbers of choirs and visitors from overseas. We’re particularly proud to welcome Ja Ronn Thompson as our Guest Director and Artist. Ja Ronn’s philosophy is to help people to sing and to live “with passion and without fear” and we believe this is a very positive message for Irish people in 2013.”

The 2nd International Gospel Choir Festival takes place in Kilkenny from 14th – 16th June; 17th & 18th July and 8th – 12th August 2013.
This year we celebrate the Year of Faith. As part of our celebration the Diocese is holding Faith Fest 2013: Celebrating Faith in Ossory, on the weekend of Friday 10th, Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th May 2013. Much of the weekend’s activities will take place in St Kieran’s College, celebrating all that is good here in the diocese. Parishes and organisations in Ossory will be represented for that weekend on Saturday from 10am to 6pm and Sunday from 2pm to 6pm, which will provide an opportunity to highlight some of the work and service that is in the diocese. On this weekend there will also be many workshops, talks and lectures, sporting events as well as activities for younger members of the family…

Liam Lawton is as at home as a solo performer as he is singing with a Choir or with an Orchestra but where he is most at home, is performing his own music. His music has been called spiritual, haunting, evocative, celtic, liturgical and numinous. He has been called “a master of melody” but shuns such descriptions. “I always worry that each new song will have a uniqueness about it, and wont have been replayed from a previous existence” – difficult when you record 14 collections!

His music has found all kinds of platforms, public and private and can be found in many different cultures, languages and places. “The most profound and satisfying experience is to know that a piece of music that I have struggled with may give hope and consolation to hurting hearts in obscure places, that I will probably never hear about, and that’s part of the blessing also”

He will always include some music in his native Irish language, “I count myself very fortunate to come from a culture that has its own rich and beautiful language which is steeped in spirituality. We are the keepers of tradition and if we don’t value and protect this legacy, who will hand it down to future generations?”

Song and Story are vital ingredients in the compositions and performances of Liam Lawton. One cannot exist without the other and leads to a unique live experience in concert. “I am surrounded by a great team on stage and off who make music making a real blessing. God has indeed blessed me!”
