EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS HANDBOOK RESOURCES

Training evenings for those people who will serve in our parishes as Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist in the coming years was held recently by the Ossory Adult Faith Development. A great number of people attended throughout the diocese and the evenings were a great success.

As part of this training, to all who participated, a small handbook was given outlining some helpful background, explanation and practical guidelines on the role of an Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist in a parish and copies of a suggested format for Communion with someone who is sick.

These booklets might also be helpful for those who are already trained and serving as Ministers of the Eucharist in our parishes. If you would like to order some of these please contact Martina at the Adult Faith Development office, Wednesday – Friday at 056-7753624 or at afd@ossory.ie. The cost of the booklet is €1.

Thought for Today

Getting the Spirit

The word “sinner” really signifies not moral inferiors as much as people who do not know who they are and whose they are, people who have no connection to their inherent dignity and importance. They have to struggle for it by all kinds of futile performances. What a waste. Thus, do not hate “sinners” or look down on them. We just feel sorry for what they are missing out on!

There is nothing you can do to lose the Holy Spirit; the most you can do, as Ephesians cleverly says, is to “grieve” the existing Presence that is “sealed” within you (4:30). You can, therefore, be totally ignorant of your “birthright” and your adoption as sons and daughters of God. You can neglect the gift, and thus not enjoy its wonderful fruits.

But there is nothing you can do to “get” the Holy Spirit either. Why? Because it comes with the product! All you can do is fan the gift into flame that inherently lies within you, and within everything that God has created.

Daily Prayers

The Our Father

Our Father,
who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name,
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done on earth
as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.

Amen

The Glory Be

Glory be to the Father,
and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning,
is now,
and ever shall be,
world without end.

Amen (more…)

FIRST READING:             Acts 1:1-11

In my earlier work, Theophilus, I dealt with everything Jesus had done and I taught from the beginning until the day he gave his instructions to the apostles he had chosen through the Holy Spirit, and was taken up to heaven. He had shown himself alive to them after his Passion by many demonstrations: for forty days he had continued to appear to them and tell them about the kingdom of God. When he had been at table with them, he had told them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait there for what the Father had promised. 'It is' he had said 'what you have heard me speak about: John baptised with water but you, not many days from now, will be baptised with the Holy Spirit.'

Now having met together, they asked him, 'Lord, has the time come? Are you going to restore the kingdom to Israel?' He replied, 'It is not for you to know times or dates that the Father has decided by his own authority, but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you, and then you will be my witnesses not only in Jerusalem but throughout Judaea and Samaria, and indeed to the ends of the earth'.

As he said this he was lifted up while they looked on, and a cloud took him from their sight. They were still staring into the sky when suddenly two men in white were standing near them and they said, 'Why are you men from Galilee standing here looking into the sky? Jesus who has been taken up from you into heaven, this same Jesus will come back in the same way as you have seen him go there.'

RESPONSORIAL PSALM:     Ps 46
Response                                 God goes up with shouts of joy;
the Lord goes up with trumpet blast.

or                                               Alleluia!

1. All peoples, clap your hands,
cry to God with shouts of joy!
For the Lord, the Most High, we must fear,
great king over all the earth.                    Response

2. God goes up with shouts of joy;
the Lord goes up with trumpet blast. Sing praise for God, sing praise,
sing praise to our king, sing praise.     Response

3. God is king of all the earth.
Sing praise with all your skill.
    God is king over the nations;
God reigns on his holy throne.               Response

 SECOND READING:        Ephesians 1:17-23

May the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, give you a spirit of wisdom and perception of what is revealed, to bring you to full knowledge of him.

May he enlighten the eyes of your mind so that you can see what hope his call holds for you, what rich glories he has promised the saints will inherit and how infinitely great is the power that he has exercised for us believers. This you can tell from the strength of his power at work in Christ, when he used it to raise him from the dead and to make him sit at his right hand, in heaven, far above every Sovereignty, Authority, Power, or Domination, or any other name that can be named not only in this age but also in the age to come. He has put all things under his feet and made him, as the ruler of everything, the head of the Church; which is his body, the fullness of him who fills the whole creation.

Gospel acclamation         Mt 28: 19

Allelluia, alleluia!
Go, make disciples of all the nations;
I am with you always; yes, to the end of time.
Alleluia!

 GOSPEL:                        Mark 16:15-20

Jesus showed himself to the Eleven, and said to them, 'Go out to the whole world; proclaim the Good News to all creation. He who believes and is baptised will be saved; he who does not believe will be condemned. These are the signs that will be associated with believers:
in my name they will cast out devils; they will have the gift of tongues; they will pick up snakes in their hands, and be unharmed should they drink deadly poison; they will lay their hands on the sick, who will recover.'

And so the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was taken up into heaven: there at the right hand of God he took his place, while they, going out, preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming the word by the signs that accompanied it.

FIRST READING:               Acts of the Apostles 18:1-8

After this Paul left Athens and went to Corinth, where he met a Jew called Aquila whose family came from Pontus. He and his wife Priscilla had recently left Italy because an edict of Claudius had expelled all the Jews from Rome. Paul went to visit them, and when he found they were tentmakers, of the same trade as himself, he lodged with them, and they worked together. Every sabbath he used to hold debates in the synagogues, trying to convert Jews as well as Greeks.

After Silas and Timothy had arrived from Macedonia, Paul devoted all his time to preaching, declaring to the Jews that Jesus was the Christ. When they turned against him and started to insult him, he took his cloak and shook it out in front of them, saying, 'Your blood be on your own heads; from now on I can go to the pagans with a clear conscience'. Then he left the synagogue and moved to the house next door that belonged to a worshipper of God called Justus. Crispus, president of the synagogue, and his whole household, all became believers in the Lord. A great many Corinthians who had heard him became believers and were baptised.

Responsorial Psalm       Ps 97
Response:                        The Lord has shown his salvation to the nations.
Or                                       Alleluia!

1. Sing a new song to the Lord
    for he has worked wonders.
His right hand and his holy arm
    have brought salvation.                                 Response

2. The Lord has made known his salvation;
has shown his justice to the nations.
    He has remembered his truth
and love for the house of Israel.                 Response

3. All the ends of the earth have seen
    the salvation of our God.
Shout to the Lord all the earth,
    ring out your joy.                                             Response

GOSPEL:                     John16:16-20

Jesus said to his disciples:

'In a short time you will no longer see me,
and then a short time later you will see me again.'

Then some of his disciples said to one another, 'What does he mean, "In a short time you will no longer see me, and then a short time later you will see me again" and, "I am going to the Father"? What is this "short time"? We don't know what he means.' Jesus knew that they wanted to question him, so he said, 'You are asking one another what I meant by saying: In a short time you will no longer see me, and then a short time later you will see me again.

'I tell you most solemnly,
you will be weeping and wailing
while the world will rejoice; you will be sorrowful,
but your sorrow will turn to joy.

AN CHÉAD LÉACHT:          Gníomhartha na nAspal 18:1-8

D’fhág Pol an Aithin agus d’imigh go Corant. Casadh ansiúd air Giúdach darbh ainm Acula, fear a rugadh i bPontas agus a bhí tagtha le gairid ón Iodáil, é féin agus a bhean Priscille, de bharr an ordú a bhí curtha amach ag Clauidias na Giúdaigh go léir a imeacht ón Róimh. Chuaigh Pól ar cuairt chucu agus toisc é bheith ar aon cheard leo – déantóirí bothanna ba ea iad – d’fhan sé leo ag obair ar a cheird. Bhíodh sé ag díospóireacht sa tsionagóg gach lá sabóide ag iarraidh dul i bhfeidhm ar na Giúdaigh agus ar na Gréagaigh.

Nuair a tháinig Síleas agus Tiomóid anuas ón Macadóin chaith Pól a dhúthracht ar fad leis an tseanmóireacht, á chruthú do na Giúdaigh gurb é Íosa an Críost. Agus nuair a thosaigh siadsan á bhréagnú agus á cháineadh, chroith sé an deannach dá éadaí, á rá leo: “Bíodh bhur gcuid fola ar bhur gceann féin. Ní bheidh mise freagarthach inti. As seo amach tabharfaidh mé aghaidh ar na págánaigh.” D’fhág sé ann iad agus chuaigh isteach i dteach duine darbh ainm Síomón Iústas, fear diaganta a raibh a theach taobh leis an tsionagóg. Chreid Criospas, uachtarán na sionagóige, sa Tiarna, áfach, é féin agus a theaghlach go léir. Agus mórán de na Corantaigh a bhíodh ag éisteacht le Pól, chreid siad agus baisteadh iad.

Salm le freagra                  Sm 97
Freagra :                              D’fhoilsigh an Tiarna a shlánú do na náisiúin.
Malairt le freagra              Alleluia!

1. Canaigí amhrán úr don Tiarna,
    óir rinne sé éachtaí.
Le neart a dheasláimhe is a chuisle naofa,
rug sé bua dó féin.                                          Freagra

2. D’fhoilsigh an Tiarna a shlánú;
nocht sé a fhíréantacht do na náisiúin.
Chuimhnigh sé ar a bhuanghrá agus a dhílse
    do theaghlach Iosrael.                                   Freagra

3. Chonaic críocha uile na cruinne
    slánú ár nDé.
Gairdigí sa Tiarna a thíortha uile,
agus nochtaigí bhur n-áthas dó.                  Freagra

 AN SOISCÉAL:                 Eoin 16:16-20

San am sin dúirt Íosa lena dheisceabail

“Tamall beag agus ní fheicfidh sibh mé níos mó,
agus tamall beag eile agus beidh radharc agaibh orm,
mar táim ag triall ar an Athair.”

Ansin dúirt cuid dá dheisceabail le chéile: “Cad é seo a deir sé linn: ‘Tamall beag agus ní fheicfidh sibh mé, agus tamall beag eile, agus beidh radharc agaibh orm’; agus ‘mar táim ag triall ar an Athair’?” Dá bhrí sin dúirt siad: “Cad é an ‘tamall beag’ é seo a deir sé? Níl a fhios againn cad is ciall lena chomhrá.” Bhí a fhios ag Íosa gur mhian leo é a cheistiú agus dúirt sé leo:

“Tá sibh ag fiafraí dá chéile
cad is ciall leis an rud a dúirt mé:
‘Tamall beag agus ní fheicfidh sibh mé,
agus tamall beag eile agus beidh radharc agaibh orm.’
Amen, Amen, a deirim libh,
beidh sibhse ag gol agus ag caoineadh,
ach beidh an saol ag déanamh áthais.
Beidh sibhse buartha,
ach iompófar bhur mbuairt chun áthais.

The Rosary

Praying the Rosary

The Rosary begins with the Opening Responsory (V/ O God open my lips. R/ And my mouth shall declare your praise.)

This is followed by the recitation of the Apostle’s Creed.  Next comes one ‘Our Father,’ three ‘Hail Marys’ and one ‘Glory Be to the Father.  After this are followed the five decades which consist of one ‘Our Father,’ ten ‘Hail Marys’ and one ‘Glory Be to the Father’ in each decade. Many Catholics pray the Rosary using a set of beads strung together to form a Rosary. The Rosary concludes with the ‘Hail Holy Queen.’
