On Friday last, a large group of students from St Kieran’s College, Loreto Secondary School, Presentation Secondary School, Coláiste Pobail Osraí and Kilkenny Vocational School gathered in St Kieran’s to participate in the visit of the Eucharistic Congress Bell to Kilkenny. The bell, which is currently on pilgrimage around the diocese, and has already been to many of the city and county parishes, was able to remain in the school for just one short hour. However, the brevity of the encounter did not lessen its impact.
Students, who filled the College Chapel to its capacity, gathered to reflect on the meaning of pilgrimage not only for the bell, but also, through it, for the students in their journey through life as well. While the stories and journeys of those assembled were as varied as their faces and uniforms quickly, in the course of the reflection, the students highlighted common themes: the need to be aware of those who help us in our journey, the importance of giving thanks for all we have received, the possibilities of all that lies ahead and, most significantly, the sacredness of every moment of our journey through life.
The prayer, which was led from start to finish by the students themselves, showed just how wonderfully talented and capable these young people are. The bell, therefore, in visiting the school didn’t draw attention simply to a journey that is past but rather as the final song, “Winter Song”, which was sung by a number of students from St Kieran’s, highlighted to the great possibility of a future lived together in faith: The Songs words resonated so clearly with the intended chime of that visiting bell: “I still believe in summer days, the seasons always change, and life will find a way… I’ll be your harvester of light, and send it out tonight, so we can start again”.
